REPRESENTATIVE CRICKET

TARANAKI ENGAGEMENTS

POSSIBLY TWO MATCHES AT XMAS

HAWERA MAY HAVE ONE FIXTURE

A rather complicated position has arisen regarding the forthcoming engagements of the Taranaki representative cricket team, and it is possible that two representative games will be played in Taranaki at Christmas. Some time ago the Victoria University College Cricket Club (Wellington) wrote to the Taranaki Association suggesting a match against Taranaki at New Plymouth on January 4 and 6. This was accepted but a few days ago the University Club cancelled it owing to the fact that by a re-arrangement of the club fixtures in Wellington the' club was due to play a competition game on January 4. Yesterday, however, the club telegraphed the Taranaki. Association asking whether Hie match could be arranged for Boxing Day and the day after, at New Plymouth. The Taranaki representative team is already committed to a match against Wanganui at New Plymouth oh Christmas Day and Boxing Day, so a meeting of the emergency committee of the association was called last night to con-i sider the position. At the suggestion of Mr. H. R. Penny, who was communicated with by telephone in order to obtain the views of the southern division on the matter, it was resolved to ■invite the Victoria University • Club to meet a Taranaki representative B team at Hawera oi/'January 26 and 27. In view of- the fact that the Wellington, team is on a holiday tour, and may have intentions of a specific visit to New Plymouth, it was decided that if Hawera. does not suit the visitors the match be played on the High School ground at New-Plymouth. - The Waikato Association telegraphed yesterday- asking whether; in view of the Hawke Cup fixture recently made for Taranaki at New Year/ the Taranaki team intended to fulfil its tentative engagement against Waikato at Hamilton on the New Year dates. This matter was also discussed at the meeting last night. It was agreed that if Poverty Bay take the Hawke Cup from Manawatu at Christmas, Taranaki forfeit its challenge, as Gisborne would be too far away for the Taranaki team to travel to. In that case Taranaki. would fulfil its engagement at Hamilton. In the event of Mariawatu retaining the cup at Christmas it'was resolved that Waikato be asked to suggest other dates for its match against Taranaki. It was thought that Easter would probably be most suitable. Owing to the proximity, of so many prospective representative engagements, it was decided that provided the Old Boys and Western Park clubs are agreeable the conclusion of the match between these two clubs, which was commenced last Saturday, be postponed, and in its stead a l , trial match be played at Pukekura Park next Saturday between Possibles and Probables from North Taranaki, including, if practicable, one or two Country players, such as Stan. Giddy and; J. Sarten. It was felt that every possible provision should be made for these players to keep in form.
