The Senate witnessed a unique and dramatic scene. when Mr. William Vare, a multi-millionaire, appeared in person to demand his seat, which was denied him by the senatorial investigation committee, whose membere found widespread bribery in connection with his election three years ago.
It wag the first time a non-meinber had been permitted to speak in this manner. Partly paralysed, Mr. Vare’s useless arm hung in his pocket while, under tremendous emotion and gripping a desk to prevent his falling, he read a lengthy statement demanding justice and fairness. He accused the other senators of buying their
way in. Mr. Vare’s physicians watched him closely as he pleaded in a faltering voice.
