KAPONGA GIRL GUIDES.

CHRISTAIAS CARNIVAL PLANS.

At the special request of residents of the Rowan district the Kaponga Brass Band held a concert and dance in the Rowan Hall on Thursday-night in aid of its uniform fund. The programme was opened with a selection by the band of some 20 members

Popular songs contributed by Alessrs. H. A. T. Gallagher and P. H. Harding earned in each case a merited encore, the accompaniments being played by Aliss Alyra Harding, who herself contributed a much-enjoyed pianoforte solo. “Her Simple Simon” (Air. C. A. Corder) in a humorous lecture on the ‘thirteen com-

mandments” laid down for parsons caused great merriment. A humorous sketch which the parts were Hile.’ by Messrs. J. Tonkin, E. Benson and G. Davies, was equally successful. Dancing was then carried on till midnight to music kindly supplied by Airs. J. Evans (piano) and Alessrs. S. and B. Wells (cornets), while Air. Ken. Williams as AI.C. for both concert and dance items fulfilled his duties capably. A much-appreciated accordion extra was given by Mr. C. Jeffreys. Supper was in the main arranged and supervised by Mrs. T. and Aliss Woodhead, assisted by the bandsmen, and Air. T. Woodbead gave valuable help as door-

keeper. The first annual inspection of the Kaponga branch of the Girl Guides and Brownies was made in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Wednesday afternoon by Mrs. E. K. Morrison, of New Plymouth, Provincial Commissioner for Taranaki, accompanied by Airs. Hodson, of New Plymouth, and Airs. Steven, of Stratford, all of whom are keen workers and helpers of the Girl Guide movement'in Tara-

naki. A brief welcome was extended by the president of the branch, Mrs. J. Guy, who said they were very pleased to welcome their visitors on their first visit, and hoped it would not be the last by any means. Mrs. Morrison expressed pleasure at what she had seen, saying that the work done by the officers of the company was, considering that it was quite a young branch of the movement, a great credit to them as well as to those they were training. ' Especially was this true in the case of the Brownies, who of all companies in the recent rally at New Plymouth, hdd easily scored first place for uniformity of dress and general appearance. She hoped* they all would endeavour to carry on as well, or even better. The visitors, together with the Guides and Brownies, were entertained to afternoon tea as the guests of the executive committee. The Daisy patrol during the past six months gained the highest points for the various kinds of work taught. On Wednesday night a meeting of the executive of the Christmas carnival committee was held. Present: Mesdames C. H. Brewer and I. Evans, Messrs. W. G. Gran (chairman), S. C. Knight, H. J, Mills, I. McMillan and J. S. Faith (secretary). The same arrangements practically as last year were made, which in-

■. ' - eluded special street lighting and a free picture entertainment for the children by special arrangement with the Kaponga Town Board, while an invitation has been extended to both the Kaponga Brass Band and the Auroa Pipe Band The secretary was instructed to procun posters for business people’s windows and dodgers for distribution in the district. In lieu of the usual toys giver to the children, it has been decided thif year to give silver coins, together witl balloons and sweets. For adults, instcac of the “spotting” competition it has beer
