AGRICULTURAL MATTERS

TARANAKI’S SOCIETY MEETS.

ARRANGEMENTS FOR NEXT SHOW.

The monthly meeting of the general committee of the Taranaki Metropolitan Agricultural Society w’as held in New Plymouth yesterday. There were present: Messrs. H. C. Sampson (chairman), C. J. Tate, J. H. Allen, J. T. Goodrich, L. Andrews, W. K. Morris, T. Telford, E. S. Allen, T. Smellie, A. T Moore, F. Dodunski, H. Trimbie, W. H. Jury, A. P, Lister, W. McKenzie and T. Wilson. Apologies were received from Messrs. A. Turnbull and G. W. Browne.

The Taranaki Co-operative Herd Testing Association advised that its executive found difficulties in subsidising a show class, as was suggested by the society, but as an alternative offered the society a prize of £4 as first and £1 as third for a class for the best yearling calf tattooed by the association.

The tattooing of calves was growing fast each year, and the association wished to make the first prize as substantial as possible for the first year. It was thought probable that the society would be able to find a second prize by transfer from some other class. On the recommendation of the executive committee it was resolved to accept the prizes with thanks, and to offer a second prize of £2. The Inglewood Co-operative Bacon Curing Company, Limited, advised that as classes in the pig section were so poorly supported the company could not see its way to renew its donation. The secretary was instructed to write to the directors of the company, asking them to reconsider their decision. The last show, when the donation was made, showed an increase in the pig section. New members were elected as follows:—F. L. Gill (Okato), T. E. Astwood (Waitara), J. R. Murch (New Plymouth), W. C. Ordish (Awakino), F. W. Copestake (Fitzroy), W. H. Whittaker (Okoke), Thds. Hart, Tatuanui (all classes Friesians); Mr. 0. B. Morgan, Woodville (all classes Ayrshires); Mr. G. N. Bell, Palmerston North (all classes milking Shorthorns); Mr. J. Knight, Feilding (purebred sheep). The president is to interview Mr. L. A. Nolan with reference to a half-holi-day in New Plymouth for March 6, people’s day at the show. ' The matter of providing a rabbit section at the show was left over until more information was received.

Mr. Percy Sole is to be asked to provide the steers for the steer-riding contests.

Spurs may not be used in future in steer-riding contests conducted by the society. Mr. W. Roberts, jeweller, is to be thanked for his donation of a trophy for the pedigree Friesian section.
