OKATO NEWS.

GENERAL ITEMS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The heavy rains of last week have been most beneficial to pastures, and there is now an .abundance of grass. Ensilage making is being carried out on many farms, the number of farmers adopting the method, in lieu of sowing root crops, of conserving fodder for the winter and spring increasing every year. There docs not appear to be much bottom to many of the hay crops in the district, but with favourable weather there is yet time for considerable improvement. The Kaihihi and Stony rivers are proving very prolific to anglers this year, and, judging by the numbers oi cars seen at the rivers during weekends, fishermen are making the most of a good season. The .visitors, however j are not having all the luck, one local enthusiast having landed over 60 fish since the season opened. In the departure of the headmaster (Mr. R. C. Larsen) for Matangi the district is losing a valued citizen. During the 16 years >of his residence in the district he has been associated with almost every movement for the district’s welfare. A genuine worker in a quiet, unobtrusive manner he will leavq a gap hard to fill.

The swimming club is opening its season on Saturday evening. Owing to the busy season the proceedings will be quite informal. It is hoped that a good number will be present. Mr. J. Garcia and Miss Julian have been elected the club’s representatives on the Taranaki Centre.

Good progress has been made with the erection of a shop for Mr. J. Shaw at the corner of Carthew Street and South Road. Mr. Edwards, late of Otakeho, is now residing in the township.
