CHILD MARRIAGE IN INDIA
BILL PROPOSES PROHIBITION. NATIVES’ DAY OF MOURNING. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Delhi, Nov. 29. Thousands of Mohammedans in India to-day observed a hartal (day of mourning) as a protest against the passing of tho Child Marriage Bill, which prohibits the marriages of Indian girls under the age of 14. Preyiously there was no limit, and it was common to see marriages of girls of ten years. Appeals to the Viceroy to prevent the Bill becoming law in April next, on the ground that the measure would interfere with the rights of Moslems and the basis of the Islamic law, proved fruitless.
Mohammedan shops are closed in the chief Indian cities. In Calcutta Europeans have difficulty in securing food supplies.
