MANGATOKI NEWS

s A BONUS TO SUPPLIERS. The Mangatoki Co-operative Dairy Company paid out on Wednesday a bonus to suppliers at the rate of Id per pound butter-fat for. the period from January to June, bringing the total pay-out for last season up to Is 7%d. It is anticipated that tlie final payment will be made next month. Though details of recent and linal sales aro not yet available, it is hoped at least another id will be distributed for the Christmas season. This month’s pay-out was at the rate of Is 6d for cheese, which indicates an optimistic spirit among the directors, and an encouraging outlook for the season. The total amount of the suppliers’ cheques his month would be in the vicinity of £II,(JOT. Notwithstanding the erratic season the October returns compare more than favourably with last season's. The fields instructor’s report lor October on the local sulphate of ammonia experimental area shows an equal grazing period compared with the control, and practically the same butter-fat provided on each. This paddock, the report states, has built , up into a good pasture of rye, although the grazing period is the same as that of the control. This is the better pasture of t'he two. Although the control area has produced good feed, it has not the same sole as that of the first area. The ryes arc not so strong. Weather conditions for .the month have not been the best, it being very dry, and what littlji raim did fall was soon dried off by the southerlies, and the grass retarded with heavy frosts. - - The Mangatoki teiinis team was well trounced by St. Joseph’s, Eltham, in the first Competition match played at Eltham on Thursday. No doubt the local players will benefit by the experience gained against, a stronger club and will play with more confidence as the season progresses. St. Joseph’s won by 22 to 2. Sid Marx won their doubles. The local team was not at its full strength. To-day Mangatoki will play Kapongaon the Kaponga courts. The local team will comprise S. Marx, G. Glover, Lambie, G. Pease, L. Pease and 11. Linn, Miss M, Pease, Mrs. H. Linn, Misses Henry, G. Linn, N. Perry and J. Nicholas. Mr. A; 0. Pease has generously decided to give two cups or trophies for competition, one each for the ladies and men instead of one as previously promised. A players’ ladder has been posted in the pavilion and ladder matches will undoubtedly stimulate interest in the club and give many younger players an opportunity to win their spurs. FARMERS’ UNION. A meeting of the Mangatoki branch of the Farmers’ Union was held on Wednesday evening, Mr. W. E. Carter presiding. Prizes were allotted for the last season’s root growing competitions. It was decided that the time of the year was not suitable to hold a function for the presentation of the prizes, but they would bo distributed immediately. The points’ prize was awarded to Mr. Kt 1 (Schmid, who wins tho cup for the second time in succession. In regard to a communication from the executive concerning a teain competition it was decided not to take any action in the meantime as it was considered such a competition was fraught with many difficulties. Much discussion took place on a scheme submitted for subdividing valuable dairy farm areas into smaller holdings. It was generally recognised that some such scheme was necessary and bound to be demanded as the years go by, each season demanding greater concentration for higher production. Messrs. W. E. Carter and U. Mac Guinness were appointed to place the scheme before the South Taranaki executive with tho purpose of having it submitted to the chamber of commerce and tho members of Parliament. Mr. and Mrs. R, D. Douglass and their daughter left by Wednesday’s exprcis for a short busines trip to Wellington. A large and fine assortment of plants has coino to hand under order from the ' local school committee, and will be ' planted out in the schoolgrounds by the staff and children.
