COUNTRY CRICKET GAMES. ONAERO DEFEAT WAITARA EAST. Waitara East were defeated by six runs in a single-innings cricket match played at Onaero. Playing a forceful innings for Onaero, Bruce Jonas made 41, ■ proving • himself a hard-hitter with good judgment. G. Avery made a sound 15, and was the only other Onaero player to reach double figures. For the visitors D. Wilkins, V. Skelton and J. Maudsley gave valuable help, the latter carrying his bat for a useful 38. Onaero meet Urenui this week-end, when an interesting match should result. Following are the detailed results: ONAERO. S. OPENING OF MIMI COURT. The official opening of the Mimi tennis courts for the season took place under favourable weather conditions. Visitors representing neighbouring clubs were present in full force, and numerous entries were received for the Yankee tournament. By courtesy of the Urenui Club the opening took place at Urenui, thus making a tournament possible, the two courts, which were in excellent order, being kept busy throughout the afternoon. Considerable interest was taken in the tournament, the games being evenly contested throughout. In the semi-finals Mrs. Murray and M. Agate (scr.), defeated Miss Gassford and Wynne Sheard (10); Mrs. R. Fitzgerald. and Ken Musker (8) were defeated by Miss Mooney and J. Thompson. After a hard-fought game in the final, Miss Mooney and J. Thompson defeated Mrs. Murray and M. Agate. At the conclusion of the tournament trophies were presented by Mr. Tony Zimmerman, club captain, who expressed pleasure at the presence of so many players, and extended a cordial welcome to a number of new members. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies’ committee. 5 GENERAL AND PERSONAL. A brass heel off the stock of an old rifle, presumably used in the Maori tribal war days, was unearthed recently by Mr. E. Mowat on his Tupari estate. This relic is one of many unearthed by Mr. Mowat during ploughing operations, his collection of axes, etc., being of exceptional interest to those interested in Maori art. Mrs. Gordon Salway returned on Monday from an enjoyable holiday in the South Island.
