Falling into a tailspii) at a height of 8000 feet a plane crashed in one of the busiest intersections of the city at Broadway and Sixty-fourth Street. A flying instructor, Charles Reid, who had never left the controls, was killed instantly, but his pupil, Robert Baillie, made a safe parachute jump from a height of 3000 feet and landed on a building on the opposite side of the street from the plane, which Crashed on the top of a new fourstorey structure with a terrific impact. Thousands of'people immediately gathered on the scene, causing the police to draw lines to keep back the curious. "We were up about ■ 8000 feet when the engine spluttered and went dead,” said Bailie. "We fell into a tailspin, but Reid brought it out. We went into another tailspin and I became frightened. Reid motioned to me to jump. .1 climbed out on to the wing and when: we had got to. about 3000 feet let go, believing that he would-follow me. He apparently tried to make for Central Park, but the plane refused to come out of the spin and crashed, into the building. "I was horror-stricken while floating down watching the plane carry my friend to what must be certain death.. It seemed to be a long, time after , the plane crashed before I landed.”
