ATHLETICS IN STRATFORD

AMATEURS AND PROFESSIONAii “Now an amateur athletic club has been instituted in Stratford it might be advisable to discuss the question of whether there is room in Stratford for this club and an amateur body too,” flaid Mr. E. H. Young, who presided at the annual meeting of the Stratford Ath-* 1 letic Club (cash amateurs) last night. ‘T think there is room for both.” Mr. T. Kirkwood said. “Are there enough men in the town interested in athletics to run both bodies successfully*/” Mr. L. J. Furrie asked. In the past it had been difficult to find men to assist in the organisation of the sports, and as an amateur club member could not act as’ a professional official and vice-versa it was doubtful whether there would be enoughroom for two bodies, he said. The amateur club would have little or no effect on the professional club’s annual day meeting, said Mr. R. R. Tyrer. It wag the amateur club’s intention, he understood, to concentrate on evening meetings. The fact that the different towns in Taranaki had various days for half-holidays would preclude the holding of a whole-da y amateur meeting in Stratford. No motion was. framed -but delegates to the centre will arrange a date for the sports meeting as usual. H.S.C. OPENING IN STRATFORD. ERA IN HOUSEHOLD SHOPPING.
