NEARLY TWENTY MILLIONS

COST OF SOCIAL SERVICE BRITISH OUTLAY GROWING EFFECT OF LABOUR’S LAWS British Wireless. Rugby, Nov. 20. In answer to a question in Parliament yesterday the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Philip Snowden, gave detailed information regarding the estimated expenditure involved under the legislative measures passed since the Government took office or in immediate contemplation. These social measures include the Unemployment Insurance and Housing Acts passed during the current year, the new Unemployment Insurance Bill and the Widow’s, Orphans and Old Age Contributory Pensions Bill now before Parliament, and several schemes, including the proposal for raising the school leaving age to 15 years, for the development of agriculture and forestry, civil service bonus concessions and the concessions of paid holidays to the civil service industrial staff. In the aggregate the commitments involve additional expenditure to the amount of £8,250,000 in the current financial year and of nearly £19,000,000 next year. These totals are exclusive of commitments arising out of the development Acts passed to enable unemployment relief schemes to be undertaken.
