MANAIA ANGLICAN FAIR

GOLD CANDIDATES WIN. KING AND QUEEN CROWNED. The summer fair under the auspices of St. Cuthbert's Anglican Church, Manaia, was held in the Manaia Town Hall on Tuesday and Wednesday, the function being most successful in every way. The total proceeds amounted to about £250. The juvenile king and queen competition was brought to a close during Wednesday evening, the Gold candidates (little Alan Clague and Mavis Walters) winning by the small margin of 102 votes over the Blue candidates, Keith Bloor and Rosali Shaw. The Red candidates, Kevin and Rae Cunningham, were a very close third, being 34 votes below the, Blue. The final details are: Gold, 3940 votes; Blue, 2844 votes; Red, 3810 votes. The coronation ceremony was interesting. Air. H. G. Gyde acted as Lord of the Treasury and Air. W. R. Spooner officiated as Lord High Chancellor. The young king and queen were installed on their throne in the usual dignified manner, being supported on either side by the other candidate's and their parents. After being presented' witli the keys of the city the first regal duties were the bestowal of honours bn a number of the loyal and faithful subjects, these honours being, of a very humorous nature. The crowning tableau was arranged in all details by Air, C..W. Abbott. During the evening' the Manaia Melody Makers’ Orchestra contributed a pleasing musical programme, and the stalls and amusements did a thriving business. A number of competitions were held during the carnival, the . results being as follows:—Doll, name Phyllis Catley; sweets, Air. W. Arnijiage; lamb (Gold), Air. W. T. Wells; lamb (Blue), Air. A. Martin (Alatapu); box of tea, Airs. W. J. Cryer; haiidbag, Air. L. 8. Hansen'; doll, name “Phoebe,” Alary Lindsay; manicure set, Aliss AL White.; cake, Air. R. Scown; cake (Gold), Mr. W. Duggan; doll’s bed, Airs. Kaiser; pig (Blue), Mr. G. Luscombe, Air. R. G. Hodge, June Dalgetty (equal); pig (Red), Air. A, H. Yarrow; stainless knives, Mr. G. R. Watts and Airs. Q. Fetch (equal); cake (Red), Air. W. Vincent;'sponge cake, Air. B. McCarthy; nightdress, Mrs. L. Simmons and Airs. V. H. Hobday (equal); notepaper, Mr. 'W. Bennett; apron, Air. F. J. Lyndon; dinner, Airs. C. Parker. The stalls were in charge of the following ladies: —Fancy work, Alcsdames C. W. Solomon and W. J. Cryer, Miss AL Bayley and the girls’ guild members; plain stall, Alcsdames V. H. Hobday, R. R. Smith and H. G. Gyde; produce, Mesdames E. A. Mitchell, E. C. Barleyman and A .Gamlin; apron stall, Alesdames J. A. Hansen, W. T. Wells, D. O. Price; bran tub, Airs. Al. Symes; toy stall, Mrs. K. Cassidy and Aliss B. Cassidy; sweets and ice cream, Airs. C. W. Abbott and Alisses A. Young and S. Lewin; cake stall, Airs. C. R. Davies; tea rooms, Alcsdames' N. Davies, J. Barlow, F. White, Hill, J. Hickey and Misses M. and B. White and assistants. At the conclusion the vicar (Rev. C. W. Solomon) thanked the candidates and their supporters for the splendid manner in which they had assisted to make the effort a success. He also cordially thanked the stall-holders and their assistants.
