ATTRACTING CHRISTMAS TRADE. RETAILERS’ ASSOCIATION’S PLANS. ' Coloured electric lights hung across the street in the business area are to lend an added air of festivity to Hawera during Christmas and New Year. This was decided at a meeting of the Hawera Retailers’ Association last night when ways and means to attract Christmas trade to the town were discussed. . '• • The . chairman, Mr.. J. M. Westaway, said the meeting was the second general one called for the purpose, but as there was not a quorum present the matter would be discussed ■. by. the executive. He deplored the lack of enthusiasm displayed by many members of the association, especially as the meeting had been called for their benefit. There had been one or two complaints from members that they had not received notice of the change of half-holiday for the show, but circulars had been sent out and if they had not been received the association could only apologise. He was pleased to announce that the membership was now 48, a record for the association. A suggestion that greenery should be included in the decorative scheme did not meet with general approval, some members taking the view that greenery withered too soon and littered the town with rubbish. In agreeing to carry out the electric lighting scheme the meeting decided to approach the South Taranaki Electric Power Board with a request that it should dbcorate the town with coloured lights from December 21 to January 4 inclusive. " ’ It was also decided to adopt a scheme of advertising, a sub-committee being appointed for thb purpose. A motion, that the association should provide a Father Christmas to parade the streets was. defeated. One of the reasons for which the previous meeting had been called was to discuss the universal half-holiday question, said the chairman. Since then, however ,the matter had been considered by Parliament, and as it was found that country meinbers were strongly opposed to any change, , the question had been allowed to lapse. He did not think the association should take any action.
