WAITARA HARBOUR BOARD

• FORESHORE PROTECTION WORK. THE MATTER POSTPONED. I ~ (From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Waitara Harbour Board was held, on Friday evening last, Mr. J. Hine presiding. Messrs. Wiiistone, Ltd., Auckland, wrote asking if the port coulfl be worked with their auxiliary scow -Moa as a request had been made to them to run freight to Waitara. . , Captain VVood,.,the secretary, reported having replied in the affirmative and offering to pilot .the vessel in if required. The bad state of a fence of ..a section under lease to Mrs.-M. E. Jones was the subject of a letter, written, by the The works committee’ reported that an inspection had been made, but no recommendation could be made on account of the present unsatisfactory system of rating on grazing teases. In reply to the board. Mr. C. R. Stead, on behalf of the beach cotvge owners, replied that they were not disposed to commit themselves to a sum for protection work at the. foreshore until the board indicated the approximate sum the tenants should find for this work. ; The chairman considered that as the board could not get a definite reply the. matter should be dropped. In reply to the board’s inquiry regarding a rubble wall, for the foreshore; the engineer (Mr. C. F. Dbwsett) reported adversely upon; th© proposal. Water and storm pressure, he. said, were liable to shift great weights and it left a douKt as to. the efficiency of such a wall. He suggested that the plan should be referred to the . Marine .Department. The chairman thought it useless, sending the plan to the Marine Department if . the board had no serious thought of carrying out the work. A motion by Mr. Dugdale to forward the plan lapsed for want of a seconder. The works committee reported having made an inspection of the pilot station and recommended the building be painted, the rooms to be repapered, and the roof renewed. It was decided to call tenders for the papering and painting and to do the roof by day labour. The committee also reported against the suggestion made by Mr. E, Dugdale to pile beach logs parallel with the south wall. , It was decided, on Mr. Dugdale s | motion, to plant marram grass on the sand hills between the south w r all and the bathing sheds. . Iron rails, once used for the support of telephone wires, are to be laid down for the carrying of the • beacon frames, and the light rails now in use are to be taken up.
