On September 5, 1889, a combined meeting of the Patea borough and county councils was held to determine the question of erecting a new bridge over the Patea River, the original structure being out of date. By 16 votes to 2 it was resolved to proceed with the erection of a new one. No agreement could be reached regarding a plan to borrow £6OOO for the work, or on a suggestion to share the cost equally between the two councils, so the resident magistrate, Major Tuke, was appointed commissioner to arbitrate as to the proportions payable by each. Maintenance was allotted as two-thirds, to the county, and one-third to the borough, the latter to retain control.
