SUCCESSES AT TIKORANGI. ! ■ PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES' . With the primary object of affording an opportunity for the presentation of prizes to the successful competitors, in the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club competitions held last season/' a//very ? ' successful concert was held at Tikorangi on Thursday evening. Mr. J. H. Allen, chairman of the 'school committee, presidecf. ' ■' ■ ■ ■• ; The concert comprised a delightful combination of choruses and folk dances , by the school pupils, and a number of musical items by various artists from. New Plymouth. The choruses bythe scholars included “The Ash Grove," “Shenandoah,”“Billy Boy/’ “Canadian . Boat. Song,” “Rio Grande,” all- of -which w‘ere_ admirably., rendered, while. the folk : dances by senior scholars' were '■ very gracefully executed. The items were all enthusiastically received and several had to'be repeated, so insistent was the applause. . The accompaniments were played by Miss’Mi liar, assistant teacher, ? who' was also responsible for the train-’ iiig of the children. - ; ' .■ ■ The -visiting artists were Miss Milne and Mr.' R. Day. (elocutionary )/Messrs. W. P. Okey/Ken.‘•Ward and R. G. Ridling (vocal). All were given an enthusiastic reception. and had to respond <to encores. Mr. ’ Ward played ' the- acconi-.. / paniments. At the conclusion of the programme Mr. A. E. Washer, chairman of ’ the Boys’ and- Girls’ Clubs executive, • said how pleasing it was to see the.keen interest . -taken -in- the club movement by <the Tikorangi district, - which had always met with. a . marked measure of success. Mr. Washer went on to say how fortunate it w r as- for’ the movement tliht the ' Taranaki' Agricultural . Society had. (agreed to take over tile Boys’ and Girls’. I Clubs. Friesians : Maida. Soffe 1, Roy Hicks 2, Doreen Soffe 3. Mangolds.—Gilbert Beaven 1, Boyd i Beaven'2, Reg. Davis 3. Winter Show prizes: Gilbert Beaven, first Prizewinner, : first Red Intermediate. . s i Mr. Washer heartily congratulated the recipients on their success and expressed the hope that the children of ■ Tikorangi district would continue their interest in the , ‘Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs. Mr. H. C. Sampson, president of the Agricultural Society,, congratulated the headmaster (Mr, A. Palmer) and the children of Tikorangi School on the wonderful success they had achieved in both the root growing and calf-rearing competitions. It reflected great credit; on all concerned. Mr. Sampson also acknowledged the hearty co-operation of the parents and supervisors, and then went on to refer to the statement of the Minister of Education that more attention would in future be directed towards agriculture. In the past he considered there had been a tendency on, the part of our educational system, to draw children from the country to, the towns, but he trusted, in view of what the Minister had’said, the position would be reversed and that there would be a desire in the young people for agricultural and pastoral pursuits. / Mr. R. G. Ridling and Mr J. M. Smith, members of the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs executive, added their congratulations to those of previous speakers, and . Mr. J. Paulger, president of the Tikorangi branch of the Farmers’ Union, said how gratifying it was to members ,to see the keen interest shown in the club work, and said that so long as that enthusiasm was apparent the union would, continue its support.Mr. Allen thanked Mr. Washer and other members of the executive for their j attendance, the visiting artists, and the local branch of the Farmers* Union. He specially thanked the children and Miss Millar for their contributions to the programme. Later supper was served by a ladies’ committee.
