5 AMENDED M.C.C. ITINERARY, S; HAWKE' OUP GROUPING ALTEREIS. TARANAKI DRAWN WITH WAIKATO Advice received by the Taranaki Cricket Association yesterday from the New O._ Zealand Cricket Council confirms the o- proposed amendments in the itinerary ip of the M.C.C. cricket team rendered )f necessary by the fact that the team ip must leave New Zealand on March 1. i- Taranaki now has the last match but n one of the tour, the fixture being scheduled to take place at Plye mouth on Saturday and Monday, Feb-. !- ruary 22 and 24. > The origin®- dates were Friday and n Saturday, January 31 and February I. ;i The new dates, though they have the disadvantage of being rather near the e end of the tour, are an improvement in i. other respects. The weather is likely c to be more settled late in February, s and the first day falling on a Saturday ensures that the half-holiday crowd will i have a full afternoon’s entertainment, r In the past, when the second day of an international cricket match against Taranaki has fallen on a Saturday afternoon, the game has sometimes lost a certain amount of interest owing to the issue being practically decided early in the afternoon. HAWKE CUP COMPETITION. An intimation that the Hawke Cup competition will again be played under the grouping system during the coming season, but that the grouping has been rearranged, and Taranaki is now drawn against Waikato instead of Wanganui, is ais-o contained in the communication to the Taranaki- Association from the New Zealand Cricket Council. This amendment in grouping is in accordance with the terms of a resolution passed at the annual meeting of the Taranaki Cricket Association last week. The chairman (Mr. C. G. Bottrill) pointed out at the meeting that Taranaki was at a disadvantage in the competition in that it always had to play a preliminary match against Wanganui, the most consistently strong minor association in New Zealand. Consequently Taranaki’s chance of playing a direct challenge against the cup holders, which followed on after winning the elimination match, was likely to come comparatively seldom. On the motion of Air. Bottrill the meeting resolved that the Cricket Council bo asked to revert to the system by which any minor association had the right of direct challenge for the Hawke Cup. Failing this recommendation being adopted, it was resolved to ask the Council to have the present grouping amended so that Taranaki might be drawn alternately against Wangaaui and Taranaki. Thu new grouping, of the associations is as follows: — Group 1. —Waiapu v. Poverty Bay. Group 2.—Hawke’s Bay v. Alanawatu. Group 3. —Wairarapa y. Southern Hawke’s Bay. Group 4. —Rangitikei v. Wanganui. Group s.—Taranaki v. Waikato. Group 6.—West Coast v. Buller. Group 7.—Nelson v. Marlborough. Group B.—S. Canterbury v. Ashburton. Group 9. —North Otago v. Southland. Group winners require to bo found not

later than December 13, and the winners have the right to challenge the holders of the cup, who at present are Manawatu. Hawke’s Bay, however, have the first tilt at the holders, as they are drawn' against them in the grouping. Owing to the fact that Waikato visited Taranaki-last season, it is likely that the Hawke Cup elimination match this season will be played at Hamilton. This point has yet, however, to be the subject of negotiation between the Taranaki and Waikato Associations. TOWN VERSUS COUNTRY. AAIENDED TOWN TEAAI. The following amended Town team will tiavel to Tikorangi to-day to play against the Country Association;— Nasmith, Hawkins, A. Clarke (New Plymouth), Quickfall, Bottrill, Jones, Webster, Robertson (Western Park), AlcLean, Evans (High School). The teams will leave Hookham's corner by bus at 9.30 a.m. Air. W. H. Quickfall is the manager. The Old Boys team to play Hawera Old Boys at 2 p.m. at Tukapo is as follows: AI. Batten, 11. W. Brown, F. J. Eggleton, K. Fookes, Hall, R, Harris, J. Kirwin, C. Lash, J.
