ON THE BOWLING GREENS

THE GAME IN CENTRAL TARANAKI WHAT THE CLUBS ARE DOING. The question of competitions for the season was discussed at the last meeting of the committee of the Stratford Bowling Club, following a report upon the matter from a sub-committee. It was agreed . that. there should be five club competitions,. as follow: — Senior championship ..(singles), to be played on the two-life system,, each game to be 21 points. B championship (singles) for players handicapped -6 and over, the system of play to be left until after nominations are received; games to be 21 points. - Colts’ championship', (singles), as was played last year; games to be .21 heads. Handicap ‘pairs. To encourage the playing of this competition during the evening, games were fixed at 15 heads only. Two byes will occur during the progress of the shield competition. On these days and prior to the shield competition starting a full-rink competition will be played, rinks to be made up by drawing'from a hat according to classification of players. On November 7 two games of -2 heads will be played,i-the same to occur on the date of the fist bye ..(Decem? ber 12), after which all rinks with two losses will retire. On the date -of the second bye the rinks left in will play finals of 21 heads. The committee stressed the point that a competition of this nature could be played in Saturday as well as Thursday divisions, interest being lent by a future deciding game for the honour of the club’s champion rink.

As a general policy the committee discouraged the playing of competition games at the week-end, except in exceptional 'circumstances or where to exclude them would mean a forfeit. The Central Division fixtures were drawn up in the..fastest, time on record. The centre’s representative (Mr. A, H. R. Amess, of the. Stratford Club) came prepared with a draw worked out in letters A, B, C, D, E. Delegates present then simply drew a letter from a hat and the name of his club was substituted for the letter wherever it occurred in the draw. The whole thing was over in about two minutes.

The Stratford Bowling Club is endeavouring to arrange a new and more distinctive blazer, but at the last committee meeting it was felt the blue and’ white did not lend itself to a suitable design. The club colours, registered away back in 1901, are navy blue blazer' with white cord and silver fern, but ■■ after considering various schemes to adopt these colours to meet modern requirements it was felt advisable to explore the possibilities of. altogether new colours. The secretary was subsequently instructed to communicate . with the Taranaki centre asking for a list of provincial registrations so that further action may be taken. Perhaps, next year, Stratford Club bowlers may be seen disporting themselves in vivid hues of green and gold or red and gold. Unfortunately, the red and black .qf Stratford has already been adopted' by another club. . . Avon has made an early - start this season and those who attended the open-, ing ceremony last Thursday were treated to a surprisingly good bowling surface considering the two days of warm rain immediately preceding. On Thursday morning the caretaker was .somewhat disheartened. His well-rolled area was simply a mass of worm casts and at first glance looked like anything but a green that was to be opened within a few hours. However, he tackled the job with vigour and acquired considerable' merit in the eyes of bowlers when the result of his . labours was put to the A meeting of ladies connected with the Stratford. Club has been convened by the president’s wife to. take place at afternoon tea in Smith’s rooms next Wednesday afternoon. The defection of Kaponga has left the central division with only five clubs in the shield competition, which opens on November 14. Hence each club in turn will experience a bye in each round.. At first thought this might, seem a disadvantage, but the free . half-holiday will present an excellent opportunity for a friendly match with an outside club or the organisation of club games. The Eltham Club opened its season on an excellent surface last Thursday, and Tariki the Thursday before. Inglewood will roll its first official jack uext Thursday, while Stratford, although the last to open, will have the Scottish 1 ipe Band in attendance on October 24.
