Sir, —In reply to Mr. Cyril Turner’* letter re the above matter, I can assure him that he is correct in assuming that the error occurred in the reporting of the lecture. Mr. Syme gave the late Mr. S. Turner full credit for having made the first amateur solo ascent of Mt. Cook. He clearly referred to his own party as attempting the climb as “a party of amateurs,” and as succeeding as being the first party of amateurs to ascend Mt. Cook via the Linda Glacier.—l am, etc., I.
