AUSTRALIANS WIN TEST

LEAGUE TOURISTS IN ENGLAND. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received Oct. 6, 5.5 p.m. London, Oct. 5. At League football Australia beat England by 31 to 8 in the first test after leading at half-time by 18 to 2. Parkin was unable to play for England. There were 20,000 spectators. The home side started with a strong attack, but the visitors got going at a terrific pace. Busch, Treweeke and German, playing a great game, carried all before them. The decisiveness of the score did not exaggerate the Australians’ superiority, which extended to every phase of the game. England was beaten both in speed and general understanding of the game and paid the penalty for weakness in defence. The only department in which England could claim any advantage was the scrum, where they gained possession nine times out of ten, but the advantage was nullified by hesitancy and faulty passing. In fact, the English backs were made to appear very moderate. The absence of Parkin, Brough and Ellaby through injuries weakened the side but did not excuse the feeble display.
