HAS GERMANY PAID ANYTHING?

(To the Editor.) ' Sir, —As you are in the swim and have access to papers which your readers have not, kindly inform us what Germany has really paid off? A discussion Between three of the levcllestheaded men I know on the above resulted in a practical agreement that Germany, like the spoilers at the sideshows, was “scooping the pool.” By sellin <r dud marks to American, English and Australasian mugs she got £lOO,000,000 to the good, at the cost of paper and ink. Then I see she has borrowed £98,000,000 to repay (?) her reparations. Rudolph Martin says the Kaiser’s wealth to-day is £20.640,000, Thysson’s income £144,000. and that there are 8000 millionaires in Germany.—l am, etc., BYSTANDER. [Under the Dawes plan Germany has paid approximately £125,000,000 each year since 1925. Under the Young plan, which supersedes the Dawes arrangement, Germany is to pay £102,500,000 per year from 1929 to 1965. From 1966 she will pay annually sums ranging from £77,50*0,000 to £85,000,000, and the whole debt will be wiped out in 1988. Certain provisions are made to meet exceptional circumstances, but in normal times the payments shown above will be made by Germany.—Ed.]
