THE CONDITION OF ENGLAND.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Re your article of October 2, “Gloomy Picture”: Should this get to the Old Country, what an advertisement for New Zealand produce, especially Scotland (not fit for a white man to live in), where the Dairy Board are doing their utmost to push our butter and cheese. Mr. Robertson says the cost of living on the Continent is lower than in England. He does not say that the standard (it always been) is also much lower. That would not suit his book; or that in Belgium horseflesh is largely used in place of beef. Would he like to see British women and children work in the fields from morning till night? Re the show of wealth: It is a good thing for him and New Zealand that it is there, for England would not be much without it. This sort of thing may be a cheap advertisement that Mr. Robertson has been abroad, but I call it very bad taste and it will hurt the feelings of a lot of people, including—Yours, etc., J. BRUNSDEN. Wharehuia, October 4.
