WAGES OF TERRITORIALS

OBJECTION FROM EMPLOYERS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Oct. 4. The payment of wages to apprentices during militaryecamps was discussed in the Arbitration Court today, 'when Mr. Cookson, on behalf of the employers, asked for the unqualified right to deduct wages. Mr. Cookson stated that those employers who responded to the Government’s appeal to take the full quota, of apprentices suffered most hardships. ■Whatever benefit might accrue from military training was a State benefit and the full cost should be borne by the State. The Defence Department paid trainees 4s a day and the employers were compelled to pay full wages in addition. The justice of the claim was shown in the fact that Government departments deducted from employees’ salaries the pay received by them from the Defence Department. z Mr. Justice Frazer said the court would withhold a decision until similar cases had been heard elsewhere.
