RENOUNCING THE WORLD

GERBAULT TIRED OF LIONISING. - Paris, Oct. 3. • Gerbault, thfe tennis player, who recently made a long voyage in a small boat, has decided to quit European civilisation, for ever since his return he has been lionised throughout France, all of which is foreign to his nature. He has an instinctive longing for freedom, preferably in great spaces such as ■ the sea affords. A new boat, smaller than the Firecrest, is being built for him at present, and he will shortly proceed south-east-ward, and he declares he will not return. He plans to live on a small Pacific Island which was presented to him on hie last voyage. This will be peopled by natives of his choice. The Firecrest’s roaming days have ended, as Gerbault iff having her cemented into a cliff fronting the Atlantic, where she will be gradually destroyed by- the action of sun, sea and wind. Summing up his intentions, - Gerbault said: “I am not a hermit through sickness or love; I am in love only with the sea.”
