GOLF SEASON CLOSES

OFFICIAL DAY AT STRATFORD. SUCCESSFUL SEASON REVIEWED. The’official - closing -of the Stratford Golf Club for the season took place, at the course yesterday, when members contested a mixed foursome and then adjourned to afternoon Mea, after which trophies Avon durihg:?the season were presented.- • ' ' ■. r;. - . ■ In making the presentation tlie presi-: dent (Mt. K. B. Anderson) thanked all those who had assisted to ni&ke the season the most successful In the club’s history. The' membership had’ increased by 50 and ; indications were that the game would becpriie - still more popular. The ; links had been improved, as had been the-greens which, in addition, had been fop-dressed. • The committee intended to improve the approaches to Nos. 5 and 8 holes, and it was hoped also to render No. 6 playable. ' These • improvements would give'two./long holes'. ‘ 'Mr; Anderson paid a tribute to the excellent work carried out by the committee and especially the secretary (Mr. Ci G. Newell), who had put,his heart into his work- and who would not be satisfied until Stratford had the .best greens in Taranaki. The club was also indebted to the ladies for their supplying of afternoon teas: at both dub and match -games. Mainly due to the ladies was the' outstanding success of the annual ball, which had resulted in- a profit of £2B ss, £25 of which would be utilised for improvements to the course. _■ - The ladies were to be congratulated, Mr.; -Anderson continued, upon bringing the Taplin Cup to Stratford for the first time. 'The men had played- nine interclub games, winning four, losing three and drawing two. The standard of play in the club had advanced during the season, and Mr. Anderson prophesied keen and close competition in the club competitions nex<t year. -. The services of a coach had been secured early in the season, but although his .first two visits were well patronised, interest waned and the last two visits enticed only a comparatively few members to the course. Congratulationsvto Mr. Anderson upon having won the club championship for the third time were extended by-Mr. E. S. Rutherfurd, ’ who presented to the president the chainipoiisliip cup, at . the same time remarking that Mr. Anderson was one of the most improved, players in Taranaki and one who would put Stratford on the map in the near future. ‘ Trophies presented were: ’ Club championship, Mr. R. Headmasters of grade 3a schools and upwards are invited by advertisement, to attend a meeting of the Taranaki branch of the New Zealand Headmasters’ Association in the Stratford school to-night.
