BISHOP BARNES' VIEWS.
“SEMI-BARBAROUS BELIEFS.”

Dr. Barn cl, the Bishop of Birmingham, returned to his attack on “magical” beliefs when he instituted a new vicar at AH Saints, Four Oaks. The semi-bar-barous sacramental beliefs which had of late become common in the church were a hindrance to true religion, he declared. Much so-called Christian theology which prided itself on being orthodox was disguised materialism.
Dr. Barnes added that he was personally convinced that our civilisation would not abandon the Christian moral standards, but that the outcome of the present ferment would be not pagan ethics, but a fuller understanding of, and loyalty to, the moral principles of Christ.
