MOTOR TURNS SOMERSAULT
INQUEST ON PASSENGER’S DEATH.
By Telegraph.—Press Association.
Dannevirke, Last Night.
Another coronial inquiry was held into the death on Wednesday last of Charles Michael McPeak, of the Government Audit Department staff, Napier, whose spine was broken in a motor-car accident on the Mangatera Hill near Dannevirke. The driver, T. G. Scott-Smith, said the car developed a shimmer going up the hill and, despite his efforts, he failed to overcome it. As he took in consequence a wider sweep of-the corner than he would otherwise have done, the car went over a bank, turning a complete somersault and resting on the wheels. McPeak died immediately upon his arrival in the public hospital. The coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, but added a rider recommending the erection of a warning post and a substantial fence painted white at the scene of the accident.
It might bo mentioned that a sedan car went over the bank at exactly the same place on Saturday afternoon in broad daylight. The driver, who was the only person in the car, escaped with a minor injury.
