ECHO FROM TIMBER STRIKE
SYDNEY MORNING HERALD FINED.
GUILTY OF CONTEMPT OF COURT.
By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright, v Sydney, Sept. 2. The Full Court adjudged the Sydney Morning Herald guilty of contempt of court and imposed - ' a fine of £2OO. At the Full Court hearing of an application for a rule nisi against the Sydney Morning Herald affidavits, tendered by editorial writers, claimed that the comments in connection with the timber strike, which were the subject of complaint, related .to bona fide reports and that the references to the basher gangs were not intended to apply to J. S. Garden and other union leaders, whose cases were before courts. The timber strikes, stated the affidavits, wefe so important from the public standpoint that continuous references to them were considered necessary. The statements in the reports and ’ articles were published bona fide from a sense of duty.
