SCHEME TO DRAIN SWAMPS
DEEPENING OP WAIKATO SOUGHT
By Telegraph.—Press Association.
Mercer, Aug. 17.
The lion. E. A. Ransom and a large party of Government officials, engineer, members of Parliament and public body representatives are touring the Waikato River to-dav.
The river has been gradually silting, and it is hoped that tho Government will give material assistance towards dredging. The present shallowness causes winter flooding, affecting 100,000 acres of swamp land which, if brought under cultivation, it is estimated, would carry 1000 families. It is believed that the deepening of the river channel will drain this land.
The. Minister promised to spend £l5OO on tho investigation; ; i •’ A
