z WILLIAM HEUGHAN CONCERT. AN ENTHUSIASTIC AUDIENCE. >, Not a large number of people advantage of the opportunity afforded them by the presence of William Heugha*n, actor-singer, Maud Bell, ’cellist, and Gladys Sayer, pianist, in the Stratford Town Hall last night, to hear the world-famous trio select from their extensive repertoire. However, those who attended made up with enthusiasm and demands for encores what they lacked in numbers. Heughan’s interpretations of folk ballads, especially those of Scottish origin, never failed to elicit requests for encores, while Maud Bell and Gladys Sayer were always recalled to give their talented renderings of selections by the greatest composers. Only rarely is Stratford favoured by a visit from such artists, and the halffilled house bore mute testimony to the musical and vocal treat that had come and gone undoubtedly without its just appreciation. PERSONAL AND GENERAL. New Plymouth Convent A and B basketball teams travelled to Stratford yesterday when they drew, 12 all, with the Stratford Technical High School A team and defeated the School B team by 14 to 16, thus securing the Taranaki championship for the grade. Over 400 tree ferns have been planted in King Edward Park, Stratford, during the past month, as well as 700 native trees, including rimu, totara, miro and white pine.

Mr. V. C. Curtis, who has been transferred from the Public Works Department, Stratford, to the Greymouth office, left by car yesterday en route for the West Coast.

The death occurred at Eltham on Tuesday of Mrs. Alexander Thomson, of Argyll Street, Hawera. Born at White Inch, Scotland, 68 years ago, Mrs. Thomson came to New Zealand in 1880, the voyage by -sailing ship occupying 93 days. Mr. and Mrs. Thomson took up land on the Strathmore estate, Otautau (Southland) and farmed there for 25 years, then . removing to Hawera. About a fortnight ago Mrs. Thomson met with a slight motor accident, which, however, was not thought to have caused her any serious injury. She was staying with her daughter, -Mrs. Maurice Bridger, at Eltham, and intended returning home on Tuesday afternoon, but had a sudden heart attack and passed away. During her residence at Hawera she made many friendis, her kindness and generosity being well known. Mr. Thomson survives his wife and there are six daughters and six sons—Mesdames L. Greer (Hawera), I. M. McLean (Wyndham), M. Bridger (Eltham), C. Bowman (Hawera), and L. Christie (Edendale); Mists Marion Thomson (Hawera); Messrs. Andrew and Alexander (Wyndham), John (New Plymouth). Archibald (Manutahi), Walter and Robert (Eltham). KING’S THEATRE—STRATFORD. ‘•'GIRL IN THE PULLMAN.” If you suddenly discovered you were riding on a runaway Pullman car, careering along at 70 miles per hour, what would you do? Franklin Pangborn portrays an exceedingly nervous young man, jumped for the emergency bellcord; Harry Myers hastily penned a letter on the Pullman desk; Heine Conklin, the porter, turned pale, while Marie Prevost and her leading man, Harrison Ford, embraced ardently while awaiting the crash. “The Girl in the Pull-

man,” which will be on view at the King’s Theatre for the last time tonight, deals with the adventures of a divorced couple after the former husband has become engaged to another woman. The story is complicated, but its development under the direction of Erie C. Kenton supplies numerous laughs. Harrison Ford plays opposite Miss Prevost, and other featured players in the cast are Franklin Pangborn, Kathrj n McGuire and Harry Myers.
