BURNSIDE. Dunedin, Aug. 14. A short supply of fat cattle at the Burnside stock sales to-day resulted in an excellent sale at improved rates. Fat sheep, however, were easier, and store cattle were a few shillings dearer. Pigs met with a ready sale at higher prices. The penning of 2000 fat sheep included a fair proportion of heavy prime and fine woolled wethers and good mixed ewes. There was a fairly large percentage of plain sorts. Heavies were cheaper by about Is 6d per head, and light prime sorts fell about Is per head. Late in the sale the demand for heavy ewes increased and some of the last races sold at values about 9d per head better than last week’s. Extra prime heavy wethers were worth to 535, prime heavy to 475, prime to 41s, and light and medium 28s to 345; the best ewes made to 495, prime heavy and prime 37s to 41s, and. medium up to 345, A small entry of l.oggets met with a poor sale, and although the works have closed down on lambs, there were a few forward, prices ranging from 25s to 325. The fat cattle yarding numbered only 154 head of very mixed quality, with a large proportion of plain to prime cows and medium heifers. There was the keenest of competition throughout . the sale and values can be quotec. at par to 10s per head in advance of late rates. Extra prime bullocks made to £32, prime £32 to £25; medium £lB to £2O; extra prime cows and heifers were worth up to £l9 l"i 6d, prime £l7 ss, and medium to £l4 15s. The store cattle entry numbered 100, all classes meeting with a bright sale, Good quality cows and heifers were in keen demand among butchers.

The pig market was good, but the majority of the supply were baconers. Competition was very keen and values rose by from 7s 6d to 10s per head. There were about- 50 stores, which met with a fair demand.
