PRIMAGE DUTY INCREASE
PROTEST MADE AT AUCKLAND. STORM AT CHAMBER MEETING. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Aug. 15. A protest against the increase in the primage duty from one to two per cent, was made yesterday at the meeting of Auckland business men, who also expressed the opinion that any deficit in the national accounts should be met by reducing expenditure. The meeting was convened by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce at the suggestion of one of its members. Mr. F. S. Morton protested that this move wae akin to propaganda for a political purpose. They never heard chambers of commerce protest when the Reform Government raised the Customs duties. Mr. Lunn retorted: “You must have been very deaf.” The chambers had always protested against increases in taxation. Mr. Morton, persisting, was ordered to sit down, and eventually he left as a protest against the manner in which business was conducted.
