INGLEWOOD NEWS

MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The usual fortnightly flag-bridge party run by St. Andrew’s Church was held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday evening, when, owing to the inclement weather, there were not as many present as usual. Despite this, there were sufficient for twelve tables. A very enjoyable evening was spent, the winners being Mesdames Henderson, Reid and Orr. After bridge, a dainty supper was served by the ladies’ committee.

Influenza U at present very prevalent in Inglewood and district, and a large number cf adults and school children are at present confined to their beds. The inclement weather is not conducive to a quick recovery. Among those who are down is Constable Longbottom. The burglars on Tuesday night, perhaps knew of this. On Tuesday at noon the fire brigade received a call to the residence of Mr. 0. Wills, Cutfield Street, where a chimney had caught fire. The brigade were promptly on the scene, and the flames quickly extinguished without much damage being done. A rather amusing scene occurred in a local hotel bar recently, when a well known insurance agent was explaining certain matters to a friend. Being very interested in his work he did not notice that his coat tails had taken fire from the electric heater. His mate promptly assisted to extinguish the fire, but not without burning his hand. On being informed that the valuable coat was insured, he uttered: “Blow it, if I had known that we could have let it go and had another beer out of the money.” The weather at Inglewood has been very inclement. The mornings have been frosty with bright sunshine, but with rain following in the afternoons. Of thq 23 days of July so f&r rain has been recorded on sixteen. Although as yet the fainfall is not up to the average for July, over seven inches have fallen, the heaviest fall being on the 13th, when 1.26 in fell. The following is a list of further donations towards the earthquake relief fund paid in at the office of the Inglewood Borough Council:
