FARMERS’ COMPETITIONS

JUDGING IN OAKURA DISTRICT. With several points to spare under each heading, Mr. G. IL Bell won the Oakura district farmers’ competition for hay and pit ensilage judged on Tuesday by Messrs J. M. Smith and C. Haines, of the Agricultural Department. Mr. C. Jans was first for stack ensilage. Tho judges were followed by a fairly large number of settlers, among whom was Mr. C. J. Harris, president of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union. Mr. Bell’s winning entries were outstanding in the competition. The quality of the hay could have been improved, but it was saved in - splendid condition. For building the stack scored within half a point of the possible. The stack gained a total of 92£ points, the highest number gained in any of the competitions judged so far. Last season Air. Bell won the championship for pit ensilage and this season he heads ths* list to daisy The quality of the ensilage is perhaps the best seen this season, although the raw material in that of Messrs. Osborne and Andrews, of Huirangi, was better and scored an additional point on that account. There is, however, really no waste in Mr. Bell’s silo, whereas Messrs. Osborne and Andrews, the next best pit ensilage judged to date, loses three points under this heading, so that on the total Mr. Bell leads with a margin of one and a half points. Mr. Jans won the stack ensilage competition for the district by half a point. A feature of the stacks was the splendid covering on those of Mr. Jans and Mr. E. H. Penwarden. Each scored 19J points out of a possible 20 under this heading, the only other stacks gaining this number of points for cover being those of Air. F. I. Phillips,, of Waitoitoi, and Mr. C. H. Alacinder, of Huirangi. There are still a number of stacks of ensilage and hay to be judged, but they will not be opened for some little time W. K. Morris entertained the party to afternoon tea, her hospitality being the subject of a vote of thanks, proposed by Air. Smith and seconded bv Mr. Harris. - Results of tho judging yesterday anas follow: —■ HAY-
