MATAROA’S MAIL CARGO

DELAY OF DAY IN DELIVERY.

By Telegraph—Press Association.

Wellington, Last Night.

The Mataroa, which arrived at Wellington to-night, brought 1150 bags of letters and 534 hampers and bags of parcels. The post office was notified of the letter mail by radio but although the ship’s agents had been standing by ready to discharge the mail to-night, no action was taken.

Had the mail been landed to-night and taken over by the postal authorities, although too late for the Main Trunk express and the Lyttelton ferry steamer, it is considered the local portion could have been sorted ready for the first delivery this morning, with the possibility that letters for as far as New Plymouth and Napier could also have been sent by train; As it is the mail will not be landed until well after 8 o’clock to-morrow morning, too late for the first deliver}’.
