CONTROL OF FARMERS’ UNION

NOW SUB-PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE.

HEADQUARTERS AT STRATFORD.

A sub-provincial executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was formed at Stratford on Saturday at a meeting at which the branches of the union in the district were represented. A delegation was present from the North Taranaki provincial executive, to which the Stratford branches were affiliated. Mr. M. G. Trotter, president of the Stratford branch, was in the chair. The chairman said for some time there had been a movement to form a sub-provincial executive. By its geographical position Stratford was particularly suited for headquarters. The brandies that had been asked to send delegates were Strathmore, Te Wera. Stratford, Midhirst, Douglas, Tututawa, Huiroa, Toko, Whangamomona and Wharehuia. The time seemed ripe for the formation of an executive in Stratford. There were executives at New Plymouth tfnd Hawera, but there was room for another at Stratford.

Air. H. E. Blyde, president of the North Taranaki provincial executive, said it had been recognised that Stratford’s needs would be best met by a local executive. Delegates from the branches could easily come to meetings in Stratford, while they would probably not care to go to executive meetings at Hawera or New Plymouth. < Air. J. Paulger, North Taranaki, said the formation of the sub-provincial executive would result in Stratford district matters being much more closely discussed than they were at present. Air. D. LeC. Alorgan, North Taranaki secretary, said the district would still be in touch with the North Taranaki executive. All matters received by North Taranaki would still be circulated to all Stratford districts. It would be convenient for the Stratford executive to meet on the first Saturday in the month, which would be a week before the North Taranaki meeting. Matters discussed by the Stratford executive could then very conveniently be sent along to the North Taranaki executive.

Mr. C. J. Harris' (vice-president, North Taranaki) said the formation of the sub-provincial executive was thought desirable in order to keep up interest. It was thought that under the old organisation interest would lag, owing to the distance from New Plymouth. Mr. Blyde said Taranaki was well represented on the Dominion executive, sending delegates from both the North and South Taranaki executives. In this respect they were ahead of other provinces, which had only one provincial body. If the Stratford executive passed a motion and sent it to the North Taranaki executive it was very unlikely that it would be turned down. The Stratford executive would have delegates on the North Taranaki executive, and the Stratford district branches would have delegates on the Stratford executive.-

Mr. H. A. Hunt, secretary of the Stratford branch, said the new organisation would have the effect of ensuring the fullest possible discussion of matters brought forward. Care must be taken to see that ample finance was provided t-o run the executive. It was resolved that the name be the North Taranaki sub-provincial executive, Stratford. The following officers were elected: — President, Mr. M. G. Trotter; vice-presi-dents, Messrs E. Marfell and Callaghan (Whangamomona); committee, Messrs Trotter, Hunt (Stratford), . Vickers, Schumacher (Midhirst), Ford, Greene (Strathmore-Te Wera), Wallace, Bredow (Douglas), Murray, Marfell (Toko), Callaghan, Rose (Whangamomona), Strack, Richmond (Wharehuia), Bunn, Norris (Tututawa), Taylor, Woods (Huiroa). The election of the secretary and treasurer was postponed until the first meeting of the executive, Mr. Hunt acting till then. ELTHAM THEFT CHARGES. YOUTHS REMANDED FOR WEEK.
