GAMING LAW AMENDMENT

BILL MAY NEED DELAYS OPPOSITION IN UPPER HOUSE. CLERGY.TO PROTEST ON AUGUST 1. (By Wire —Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. Until the Address-in-Reply debate is out of the way it is impossible to say when the Gaming Amendment Bill, in charge of Sir George Hunter, will come on for its second reading in the House of Representatives At present the ’Bill is down for the second reading stage for Thursday of , this week, but it is possible that it may not come on then, as it has been stated that if the Address-in-Reply debate ends to-morrow, the House will proceed to consideration of the draft of the new stam’Ag orders, which will take some time to get through, as they are very numerous, not to say contentious. When a deputation from racing interests waited on the Prime Minister some time ago a request was made that the Government should bring in an amendment to the gaming law, but the Prime Minister declined to do so, contenting himself with promising that facilities for discussion would be provided if a private member moved in the matter. Since then Sir George Hunter lias introduced a. Bill which provides for the telegraphing of investments to the totalisator and for the publication of dividends

Supporters of the Bill believe that it will command a majority in the lower House and some go so> far as to urge that if the second reading is- carried by a substantial margin the Government should then take over the measure or afford the fullest opportunity for its passage.

It is not likely that anything of a very definite nature will be -disclosed until the second reading. If the Bill goes through the House with a good majority in its favour attention will be turned to the attitude which the Legislative Council will adopt towards it. It is taken for granted that some Councillors will put up opposition to the Bill.

A deputation from the Ministers’ Association to protest against the Bill will wait on the Prime Minister on August. 1.
