PASSENGERS ON SMALL BOAT

BREACHES OF MARINE RULES.

By Telegraph.—Press Association.

Palmerston N., July 23.

The Marine Department recently proceeded against James Johnston and Maurice Field on a charge that the owner and master respectively of the ship Viking, not exceeding six tons register, propelled by gas, unlawfully carried passengers to sea for hire, without a duly certificated master or engineer. A further charge against Johnston was that he was owner of a vessel plying on navigable waters between Paraparaumu and Kapiti without a valid certificate or survey. Giving his reserved judgment, Mr. Stout, S.M., said he had no doubt that fishing boats which, as touch, were exempt from the provisions of survey in the Shipping and Marine Act and as to carrying a duly certificated master or engineer in the amending Act, must comply with the provisions if the boats are hired out to fishing or picnic parties. Fines were inflicted on defendant.
