By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.

Melbourne, July 22.

The most spectacular and destructive fire which has occurred in the city since the Town Hall fire in 1925 swept through the premises of Payne’s Bon Marche, Bourke Street.

The flames spread io the adjoining premises, including the furniture warehouse owned by Patersons Limited, three floors of which were badly damaged. Payne's was completely gutted. A hundred firemen fought the flames for four hours. There were thousands of spectators. The damage is estimated at £490,000. The cause of the outbreak is unknown.
