WAITOITOI-URENUI NEWS

EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The first of a series of euchre parties and dances under the auspices of the school- committee was held in the Mimi School room on Monday evening, and in spite of the inclement weather a large gathering was present. Fourteen tables were occupied in the euchre tournament. A play-off was necessary to decide the winner of the men’s prize, an electric torch. In the semi-finals Messrs. T. I. Zimmerman “and A. Wiley were defeated by Messrs. R. Jones and I. Rodgers, Mr. R. Jones winning the final. Mrs. J. Rockett, 11 games of 13, secured the honey jar. The prizes were donated by Messrs G. Baker and J. Phillips. The tables were under the charge of Messrs. J. Thompson and G. Baker. Supper was in charge of Mrs. G. Baker. Dancing was indulged in, the music being supplied by Mr. and Mrs. R. Allen. Mr. A M. Zimmerman was master of ceremonies.

The Urenui footballers held a most successful dance in the Urenui hall on Thursday. The arrangements were in the capable hands of Messrs R. Topless and G. Smith, honorary secretaries, who assured a good time for all. The floor was in excellent order and the music supplied by Mr. N. Edwin, with extras bv Mrs. R*. Johnson, was all that could be desired by the dancers. A competition held during the evening for a refreshment set was won by Mrs. J. Rockett. The catering arrangements were carried out by members of the football club under the guidance of Mrs. L. Rattenbury. The duties of master of ceremonies were carried out by -Mr. B. Gainfort. GROUP HERD TESTING.

Considerable interest is being evinced by local dairymen in the he.rd testing movement, and the meeting held in the Urenui Hall on Wednesday evening for the purpose of widening the association’s activities in North Taranaki was attended by 60 herd owners representing Uruti, Pukearuhe, Waitoitoi, Urenui and Onaero districts.

Mr. F. L. Bayes, Uruti, presided, associated with him being Mr. Guy Bell, convener and organiser of the North Taranaki Herd Testing Association, Mr. A. Ross, senior tester, and Mr. G. Scott, testing officer for the Uruti group. Mr. Bayes referred to the splendid pioneering work carried out by Mr. Bell in founding a testing association in North Taranaki. It was mainly through his efforts, assisted by Mr. Hugh Bailey, secretary, that the association was now one of the strongest in New Zealand.

Mr. Bell, in briefly outlining the working of the association, congratulated the newly formed Uruti 'group (comprising Uruti, Pukearuhe, Waitoitoi, and Mimi districts) on its excellent results, the butterfat average per cow of 286 lbs in 256 days being the highest group average in New Zealand. He was proud to say they had the highest association average with 2631bs fat in 251 days. Brom 2000 cows with an average of 2401bs butter-fat in 253 days the association had made rapid advancement, no less than 15,000 cows being under test during the past season, and these showed the excellent returns of 2631bs butter-fat for 251 days. Calf marking inaugurated by the association was no doubt going to prove remunerative to members, the demand for heifers with a strong butter-fat backing being an increasing one. A number of those present cignified their intention of "joining the association, and after a canvass of the district had been made it was probable that a new group embracing the Okoke, Urenui and Onaero districts would be formed. The chairman made appreciative references to the conscientious and efficient manner the local group testing officer, Mr.. G. Scott, had carried out his duties. RECORD DAIRY SEASON. The excellent returns of suppliers to the Waitoitoi Dairy Company for year ending June 30, 1929, is reflected in the annual report, which, from the viewpoint of production and pay-out, is easily a record for the company. The total season’s output was sold for 9 3-8 d per lb cheese, and monthly advances of 1/9 and 1/8 per lb butter-fat were made to suppliers. With a final payment of 1 13-16 d per lb butter-fat yet to be made, the total pay-out will be 22.27 d per lb butter-fat, which is probably a record for New Zealand. The total amount advanced to suppliers for the year is £26,189 Ils lOd. For the 1929 season 6,405,1451bs milk, averaging 4.46 per cent, butter-fat were received, as compared with 4,966,7131bs and 4.38 per cent, of butter-fat the previous season', the total-lbs cheese made being 749,250 and 564,400 respectively. GENERAL AND PERSONAL ITEMS. Probably the largest consignment of bulls from one stud passed through this district recently en route for Waitara to be railed to a northern buyer. The line, 24 in number, were an exceptionally select lot, and a credit to the breeder, Mr. W. J. Freeth, Pukearuhe. One hundred and forty motor cars and 32 motor cycles were registered at the Urenui post office for the year ending May 31, 1929. Mrs. D. George, New Plymouth, is the guest of her sister, Mrs. E. Mowat, Waitoitoi.

Mrs. P. Preston, Rotorua, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Phillips, Mimi.

Mr. and Mrs. J. Guild have taken up theic residence in Waitoitoi.
