PERSONAL AND GENERAL. The fund opened by the Mayor of Patea for the relief of earthquake sufferers now stands at £152 18s. Mr. M. A. Hoult, Otorohanga, is on a visit to Patea. Mr, Don. Grant has been appointed to a relieving position on the teaching staff of the New Plymouth Boys’High School. He will be greatly missed from the Patea Rugby club, of which he has been a member this season. Mr. G. W. King is still confined to his bed with an attack of influenza. Mr. Norman Peacock and family intend residing with Mr. G. H. Peacock, Patea, until they are able to return to their farm in the Maruia Valley, which was partly destroyed by the earthquake. Mr. H. A. Green, postmaster at Patea, has been confined to his bed during the week with an attack of influenza. The Patea Beach Improvement Committee met on Monday last, Mr. P. S. Finlayson presiding. Present were: Messrs. Locker, Roots, Ndlson, Pauling, Lamb, Gilbert and Clark. Mr. Roots reported that the streets supervisor and the Mayor had met some members of the committee and inspected the road to the heads. As a result of the inspection it had been decided to undertake repairs to the road forthwith and to carry out the metalling of the top end, in conjunction with Mr. Glenny, on July 31, as it was an extremely urgent work, The secretary reported that Mr. King had arranged to survey a footpath to the beach, submit a report and advise g.s to how the work was to bo carried out.

It was resolved that the committee write to the borough council and recommend that the beach road be closed for heavy traffic during certain months of the year. Mr. Lamb stated that Mr. W. G. Walkley, secretary of the South Taranaki Automobile Association, had promised to assist the committee by every means in his power. The secretary reported that £22 Is 9d had been expended in wages for the erection of the new shed, £3 13s in dismantling the old one and £lO 4s 6d in material, leaving £lB5 unexpended. A well-attended meeting of tho Prohibition Party of the Patea electorate was held in tho Patea Presbyterian Church. About 20 from other places were present. Tho Rev. E. S. Emmett presided. Mr. S. M. Dixon explained the objects of the meeting, mentioning the new policy of decentralisation which placed more responsibility on the local organisations. After discussion resolutions were adopted affecting local organisation and temperance education. It was intimated that the Education Department and boards had approved of temperance charts being placed in the schools, and orders were forthcoming l from Kakaramea, Alton and Patea j Schools. '
