In' spite of the rough weather, a good many of the girls were present with their older friends. An interesting addition to the usual form of the ceremony was made by the presence of senior department girls and their parti- ; : cipation in the pledge of loyalty. Ten ' girls were enrolled as Citizens, and one ' had earned her . Girl Citizen brooch. Nancy Gardner, Chief Citizen, was re-

ceived by the community and presented bv Rita Meredith, retiring Chief Citizen, with a gold brooch as symbol of her office. Rita Meredith was then enrolled as Counsellor. After the ceremony, a song competition was held between live groups of wirls, the first place being given to the Rangitiri section, for an excellent rendering of an c’d English song. “Thanksrriving.” Mr<s. Cornwall and Mrs. Davie acted as judges and gave very helpful criticism. They hoped that many of the girls might make a more definite study of choral singing now their interest had been roused.

Miss Eileen Horner accompanied the girls with much sympathy, both during the competition and during thejirevious ceremony.

I OLD GIRLS’ DANCE. A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. Quite one of the moot successful dances held by the Old Girls of the New Plymouth High School took place on Wednesday night at the 'Workers’ Hall. The committee are to be congratulated on the way in which they converted the hall into such a colourful place of balloons, Japanese lanterns and dainty greenery.
