HUBERT CARTER’S RECITAL.
WARM RECEPTION GIVEN.
A wealth of music and song was given those who attended Mr. Hubert Carter’s recital in St. Joseph’s Hall, Hawera, last night. A fine programme of ballets, songs and arias was submitted to the audience, which showed in no uncertain manner its appreciation of the splendid work of the artists. Mr. Carter was assisted by Miss M. Barnes, Messrs H. Lambie, D. MeQuin and H. Ackroyd, all of Mr. Carter’s Hawera studio, with Mrs. D. McQuin at the piano. Seldom is there heard in Hawera such magnificent tenor singing as that of Mr. Carter. His is a voice with a wonderful range which he used last night to perfection, holding his hearers, delighted until the last note. Miss Mary Barnes, the possessor of a 'fine contralto voice,, was heard to advantage in three solos and thiee arias, her rendering of the arias being particularly pleasing. The baritone singers, Messrs Lambie and Ackroyd, were in good voice, as also was the tenor. Mr. McQuin. Mr. Ackroyd’s renderin" of the aria Largo al Tactotum, from°the Barber of Seville, was one of the gems of the evening, and he well deserved the sustained applause that greeted it. All the artists wore generously applauded, and after every appearance were compelled to respond with encoie numbers. At the close of the programme Mr. Carter thanked the audience for their warmth. He particularly thanked Mrs. McQuin, the accompamste, who, although suffering from an injured finger, had so splendidly carried her share of the programme.
