OLD-TIMERS’ BALL

OUTSTANDING SUCCESS AT OKATO. From past experience it has come to be regarded as an axiom that whatever the Hempton Hall Committee takes in hand is sure to be well done, and tho Old Timers’ Ball which was held last night proved no exception, as it was an outstanding .success. The large crowd that attended from all parts of th©. coast as far as New Plymouth on th© one hand and Opunake on the other, voted it one of the most enjoyable even- » Ings that they had ever experienced. A pleasing feature was the number of “old-timers” who attended the annual re-union, though unfortunately the prevalence of ’flu prevented many from being present; including the popular and energetic secretary, Mr. L. D. Hickford, ’• whose organisation had been such a prominent factor towards the success achieved.

The hall had been very tastefully decorated with streamers, making a picturesque canopy.under which the gailyclad ladies and their partners glided on t the perfectly prepared floor to the music of Coburn's Star orchestra. In keeping '_V with the event waltzes, mazurkas, barn dances, lancers and d’alberts took turn with the present day jazzes, and the numbers that took the floor showed that they have not yet been relegated to the limbo of a forgotten past. Messrs. . C. Eustace and L. O’Sullivan were assiduous in their duties as M.’sC., but on the whole their task was an easy one, the atmosphere engendered from the start being one of sociability. The supper was a feature, the spacious supper room being decorated in keeping with the hall, whilst the tables, decorated with flowers, were laden with good things. Numerous sittings were necessary, but so thorough was the organisation that theri was no delay and the ladiee’ committee, which comprised Mesdames N. Corbett (convenor), L. D. Hickford (secretary), P. Corbett, J. Corbett, L. Wooldridge, A. Wooldridge, L. Tait, F. Roebuck, H. Webb, E. Joyce, Misses D. JMoorby, L. Moorby, Ashley, A. Hoskin, and I. Hoskin, certainly more than upheld the high reputation set by their predecessors. During supper extras were played by Mrs. Robertson and the Magnavox. The hall committee, Messrs. C. Eustace (chairman), L. Carey, A. J. Smith, J. Shaw, L. O’Sullivan, J. O’Sullivan, N. Corbett and L. D. Hickford (hon. secretary), are to be complimented on. the success achieved.
