NEGLIGENT DRIVING CHARGE
MAORI DRIVER ADMITS OFFENCE. BRAKES FAILED TO ACT ON HILL. Negligent driving of a motor vehicle by Te Aonui, Hastings Road, Matapu, when proceeding along the NormanbyOkaiawa Road on May 30 cost him, on a plea of guilty before Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., at Hawera yesterday, court costs. The real negligence, said Mr. Salmon, consisted of driving a vehicle without two efficient independent brakes which was the second charge. For this offence Te Aonui was fined £2 and costs.
Unab’ to stop.his car when approaching a bridge downhill, Te Aonui’s car had collided with another vehicle at the bridge. Sergeant Henry described defendant as “a very decent Native.” He had admitted his liability on the spot and offered to make good any damage.
