BOY BEATEN TO DEATH
MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE PROVED. FIVE YEARS’ SENTENCE PASSED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received July 16, 8.30 p.m. Melbourne, July 16. Herbert Bownds, a middle-aged labourer, has been sentenced to five years’ Imprisonment for manslaughter. The evidence was that he beat a boy named Foster’ so severely with the buckle end of a strap that the boy died. The boy’s offence was stealing jam.
