EXCITING MOTOR RACING
INTERNATIONAL CONTEST RUSSIAN DRIVER THE WINNER ENGLISHMAN CLOSE BEHIND 'British Official Wireless. Rughy, July 14. By the narrow margin of 14 seconds the Russian driver Ivanovsky in an Alfa Romeo (Italy) won the Irish international grand prix'motor race for large cars at Dublin yesterday. Cars of five nations—Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Austria —competed in the race and, as was expected, it resolved itself into a stern contest between the Alfa Romeo and Bentley cars. The 300-mile course, in 70 laps, was exceptionally difficult, with awkward corners, and after 50 laps Kidson, in a Bentley (Britain), travelling at times at over 100 miles per hour, was gaining slightly on his opponent. With 50 miles to go he was still five miles behind and thereafter he pulled up by 20 seconds per lap.
There was tremendous excitement in the closing stages of the race, which was run on handicap conditions. Other Bentley ears, whose average speeds exceeded that of the winner, were also placed third and fourth. There were many bad skids during the race.
