SPARROW CHAMPIONSHIP

LYTTELTON SHOOTER WINS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hastings, July 15. The sixteenth New Zealand sparrow championship was shot under very bad weather conditions on Saturday, and resulted in an outright win for H. Grennell, Lyttelton. A very keen wind, together with frequent showers in the early part of the day, made shooting uncomfortable and difficult. The birds were in excellent condition and proved too fast for the majority of shooters. Several visitors reported that they were the best and fastest birds they had ever shot at. Owing to the bad weather conditions prevailing the executive of the Gun Club Association asked that all the shooters with four misses should stand down after the seventh round. This put 15 out of action at the end of the 11th round.

W. Woolver, the previous ehampion, was all on, but had the misfortune to lose the next three birds. H. Grennell, who had lost three birds in the first ten, carried through the remainder of the match without a miss and won the championship with 18 birds. H. Clinch, who could have tied with H. Grennell, had exceptionally bad luck with his last bird. Grennell, apart from winning first prize money, gets a 10-guinea gold medal. The winner’s prize-money amounted to £46 1-3 6d. Details are: H. Grennell, 18; H. Clinch, R. Buick, W. Nicholls, R. ilclllwick, C. E. Grey, W. Woolver, all 17. £lOO PIGEON HANDICAP DECIDED. Hastings, Last Night. The New Zealand Gun Club Association’s championship shooting was continued to-day in fine, cold weather. The £lOO ten-bird • pigeon handicap was finished this afternoon. R. Anist, R. Buich, A. Head, G. Lomas, H. Clinch, E. D. Lanswell, H. J. McDonald and 0, Nelson divided the first prize with all birds on.
