BISHOP’S ROMANCE
MARRIAGE TO SECRETARY.
ENGAGEMENT AT COLCHESTER.
London, May 28.
Another romance of a bishop and his secretary was revealed this week when the engagement was announced of the Bishop of Colchester, the Right Re'v. Thomas Alfred Chapman, and Miss Audrey Sybil Eirene Sadgrove, youngest daughter of the Rev. Thomas and Mrs. Sadgrove, of Conifers, Stanway, Colchester. Tho bishop’s first wife, whom he married in 1894, died last year. He is 62, and has a son and daughter. Miss Sadgrove, who has been secretary to the bishop for two or three years, is spending a short holiday. Formerly she assisted her father in church work at
Fairstead and played tho organ. She was educated at St. Mary’s Hall, Brighton, where she was head girl. The bishop, who is extremely popular in Colchester, was formerly vicar of Bolton for many years.
Dr. Chapman will be the second bishop to marry his secretary within a year, Dr. Bertram Pollock, Bishop of Norwich, having married in October last Miss Joan Ryder, who had been his secretary for some years. Miss Ryder was also the daughter of a clergyman.
