THIRD CRICKET TEST

ENGLAND V. SOUTH AFRICA

VISITORS MAKE POOR SCORE ENGLAND LOSES 2 FOR 106 By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian Press Association, Received July 14, 5.5 p. ni> United Service. London, July 13. The following are the teams for the test match at Leeds: — South Africa.—Deane, Catterall, Siedle, Morkel, Mitchell, Vincent, Quinn, Van dor Merwe, Bel], Owen-Smith and Duminy. England. —White, Sutcliffe, Hammond, Hendren, Duckworth, Freeman, Woolley, Bowley, Tate, Larwood and Leyland. Injuries to the South Africans Cameron, Christy and Taylor necessitated a broadcast appeal for Duminy, who has not played test cricket since he played against Stanyforth’s team in South Africa. He hurried from Switzerland to participate in the third test. The match opened in perfect weather. The South Africans won the toss and went in to bat. The game began in a sensational manner, Siedle going out for a duck, Larwood taking his off stamp through the batsman playing inside the ball. The score rose steadily by singles until at <5 Mitchell, after a valuable second wicket stand, was bowled. Morkel and Catterall survived until lunch, when the score stood at two for 94.

Fourteen thousand spectators watched steady play when the game resumed until Catteiall, whose innings was most praiseworthy, was bowled. After this Duminy was bowled and Morkel stumped in quick succession. Owen-Smith was caught off Freeman whoso length and spin, however, did not prevent Vincent hitting two sixes off him in the same over. Hammond Vincent when he had scoied 15. Ke also missed Van der Merwe, though he atoned subsequently by catching Van der Merwe low down left-handed.

After the eighth wicket had added 49, the innings, which had lasted 255 minutes, closed. The moderate score was largely due to Freeman’s bowling. Vincent hit four sixes and six fours. England went confidently to the wickets after the tea adjournment, and at the close of play had 130 to make, with eight wickets in hand, to equal their opponents’ score. The gate receipts totalled £IOIS. The scores are:— SOUTH AFRICA.
